Radjah Shelduck and Friends

Radjah Shelduck, Little Black Cormorant, Little Pied Cormorant, Nankeen Night-Heron

Cape York, Queensland, Australia

October 2012

This is one of my first photographs on my Cape York tour of 2012. I've gotten so much mileage from one little tour for this blog. Wish I could go on one every year. There are a number of places I really want to go to. Especially in Australia. In the meantime I see the Sakura buds are about to pop and a number of spring birds are partying in the trees. Must get out with the camera this weekend.

A couple of BiFs of PiPs at Cape York. It seemed wherever we were at Cape York, every few minutes we'd have a sprinkling of these passing by.

A couple of poor shots of a male Mistletoebird.

They are found almost Australia wide and are renowned for their spreading of Mistletoe around the country.

It's a Girl!

Eclectus Parrots
male-green top right, female-red and blue bottom left

Cape York, Queensland, Australia

October 2012

A couple of poor record shots of Eclectus Parrots high up in the canopy at Cape York.

The female is the red one on the lower left. The green one hiding away is the male.

I hope this publishes correctly, the auto-correct keeps changing my typing to 'eclectic' parrot!

Here's a Whimbrel in front of my hotel in Cairns back in 2012. At least I hope it's a Whimbrel.

Please set me straight if I'm wrong.

White-winged Chough

White-winged Chough

Queensland, Australia

Here's some pics of a White-winged Chough in my twitching attempt to build a species list on the blog.

These are found in Eastern Australia. I often see them along dirt tracks lined with eucalypts. Regretfully, I haven't spent much time observing their behaviour.

"Chough", is pronounced, "chuff".

Merlin

Merlin

Shitada-mura, Niigata, Japan

March 11, 2005
This is one of my only record shots of  a Merlin in Japan. I took this back on March 11, 2005 on the outskirts of Shitada which was a village nestled in the mountains of Niigata. It has since merged with the city of Sanjo.

I was living there right through winter 2004/05 and saw some wonderful things including my first Steller's Sea-eagle.

As far as Merlins go, I haven't had any better photo opportunities other than this. I saw my fist Merlin chasing birds in a city park in Saitama back in 2000, and the last one I saw was sitting high up on a wire near Fukushimagata a few years ago.

A dynamic little raptor, I'd love to see another one and get better shots than this.

The photo was taken with my fist digital camera, a Panasonic FZ-20 bridge camera.

More Apostlebirds

Apostlebird

Near the Granite Belt, Queensland, Australia

Here are some more Apostlebird images.

Thank you for the comments I received yesterday. I am curious that people haven't heard of these before.

We can see them on country tracks south or north-west of Toowoomba, Queensland.

They are interesting in that they get around in family groups of 12. I usually just grab an image or two and don't study them too closely because I thought they are not very colourful and almost featureless. (To my narrowmindness) Looking at the photos from Japan, I realise how unique they are. I guess there are colourful parrots and honeyeaters in Australia to distract the attention of birders.

Two Apostles taking a Bath

Apostlebirds

Len and Frank Mengel's property, Felton, Queensland, Australia

2015

Last year, Mick and I were invited to Len and Frank Mengel's property to look around for birds. We saw some nice ones and I scored these Apostlebirds taking a bath.

Thank you, Len and Frank.

Oriental Plover

Oriental Plover
non-breeding

Cape York, Queensland, Australia

October 13, 2012

Having bit of a quiet time birding. Thought, in the mean time, I should do bit of a twitch for the blog and add more new species to its list. I have many images of species not on the list so I may as well upload the records.

Here is a non-breeding Oriental Plover up at beautiful Cape York. Photographed from Klaus' 4WD. back in 2012.
