October Arrivals

Common Coot

Hyoko, Niigata, Japan

October 21, 2017

Not so cold yet, but pretty dull. I'm happy to see all the new arrivals at Hyoko. Some Tundra Swans, but no Whoopers yet.

The usual assortment of common ducks have made their way from the continent in the north. There'll be many more to come in the weeks ahead. Hope they travel well with the typhoon coming our way.

I thought I'd lead off with a Common Coot. They're here for summer too, but I usually look past them. Quite a nice face really.

Zen and

Spot-billed Duck

Fukushimagata, Niigata, Japan

I saw a book advertised in a Birdlife magazine this past summer and I ordered it. It is called "The Art of Mindful Birdwatching - Reflection on Freedom & Being". It was written by Claire Thompson and published by Leaping Hare Press, UK.

It has some nice ideas and I recommend it.

I sometimes worry about and, and a bird a day reminds me of where I am. I'm sure many birdos would agree with this book.

Raptor Migration, Mt Yamamotto, 2017

Raptor Migration

Mt Yamamotto, Ojiya, Niigata, Japan

September 24, 2017

We enjoyed watching the raptor migration at Mt Yamamotto, Ojiya this morning. We just stayed for 2 hours but we saw hundreds. My photos don't really show the splendid spirals of hundreds rising vertically in a big corkscrew above us. We didn't get close to any either and these pics are heavily cropped.

Quite a few photographers and birders there and we were kindly given a beautiful brochure listing the records for past years.

I look forward to this day each year. It is the end of summer but the beginning of lots of bird activity for the next few months. Gotta get into it now before the winter arrives.

Lots of dragonflies in the air and we could thrill at the occasional Peregrine or Japanese Sparrowhawk diving about the place to get them.

Back to Birding

Peregrine Falcon

Fukushimagata, Niigata, Japan

September 18, 2017

It's been a while since I posted some birds on this blog. I rediscovered over the weekend that walking around and photographing birds makes me happy. I should do more of it. We all should.

Kyoto

Kyoto

Japan

May, 2015

Here's some pics from a visit to Kyoto in 2015. I lived there many years ago and took slides of birds along the Kamo River. I like urban birding. Now I'm interested in the scenery.

My uncle and I went for bit of a look around Toowoomba back in January.
